About the Event

Osceola Arts is proud to present the works of Angelica Acevedo Sánchez at Buenaventura Lakes as part of the ongoing Art in Public Places Program.

Sánchez is an artist living in Central Florida. Her family emigrated to the United States from Mexico which is a primary influence on her work. A first-generation student, she will receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art in Fall of 2025 with a specialization in painting. She recently participated in the student group exhibition Penumbra. Working initially with acrylic paint on canvas, her work has expanded to include charcoal, collage, soft pastel, and watercolor on surfaces beyond canvas, such as paper and cardboard, with the inclusion of found objects that provide cultural context to her work.

"My artwork is centered around family dynamics from the perspective of someone belonging to an immigrant family. I explore issues of memory and identity resulting from this experience using a variety of media such as acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, pastel, and collage on a variety of surfaces and the inclusion of found objects that provide cultural context to the subject matter I deal with and conjure a domestic space. Through my work I try to understand my personal history as well as that of my family's in the spaces we inhabited. Often, I focus on the process over the outcome, getting an initial mark or image down on the surface to which I respond and rework on top of; I allow previous iterations to remain as ghosts, exiled figures that speak to the displacement, disruption in memories, and the feeling that one is 'neither here nor there' that I

experience. I am interested in capturing the vagueness and lack of knowing, the conflicting emotions and dynamics resulting from immigration, turning what was once known and familiar into something unclear and almost unreal."

The exhibition is on view at the Buenaventura Lakes Library (405 Buenaventura Blvd) from December 18 to February 12 during library hours.
