About the Event

Born in the former Soviet Union, Vera Gubnitskaia first learned how to read and then how to read between the lines. This was inevitable in a society where honest opinions and unorthodox views were discouraged (at best) or punished. You had to be able to read what was not spelled out, hear what was not explicitly said, and see what was not pictured. Ironically, these adverse conditions allowed her to develop a style that gives depth to her art, asking you to look beyond the immediate visual. Each of Gubnitskaia’s paintings, drawings, or sculptures has a story, and then a story behind a story, like endless reflections in a mirror. Each piece immerses you in the artist’s interpretations of fantasy, poetry, literature, music, and past and present experiences.

Vera Gubnitskaia is an artist, a writer, a freelance editor, and a retired librarian, residing in Florida, US.  She has studied, worked, and created art in Russia and the United States. Gubnitskaia has degrees from the Moscow (Russia) Institute of Culture and Florida State University. She worked in academic and public libraries in Russia and the United States, as well as with several publishing houses in the United States. Gubnitskaia is currently a studio artist resident at Crealdé School of Art (Winter Park, Florida) and a member of the Central Florida Watercolor Society. Gubnitskaia constantly explores and experiments with new art techniques. Her body of work includes paintings, drawings, and sculptures.
