About the Event

Since 1996, the CREALDÉ STORYTELLERS TEEN DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM has given photography instruction to students ages 13–17, providing the opportunity for self-expression while exploring the heritage of their community. From Orlando’s urban Parramore neighborhood to suburban Sanford and Apopka to rural Geneva and coastal New Smyrna Beach, teens from around Central Florida have completed 18 photographic documentary exhibitions to date. STORYTELLERS 17 and 18 projects were completed in Volusia County.

Project creator, Crealdé Executive Director and professional documentary photographer Peter Schreyer mentored and instructed the students in visual and narrative storytelling using traditional film-based photography. Students participated in numerous walking field trips in the historic DeLand and New Smyrna Beach neighborhoods. In addition, they traveled to the art studios and galleries at Crealdé, where they learned how to process film and turn negatives into exhibition-quality photographs in the professional wet darkroom. The young photographers also visited Crealdé’s Hannibal Square Heritage Center in the historic African American neighborhood Hannibal Square in west Winter Park, where they learned about the educational power of collecting oral histories and photographs within their own community

CREALDÉ STORYTELLERS on display in the Community Gallery at Osceola Arts April 22 through May 22. Free art reception on Saturday, April 30 from 2-5pm. For more information contact marilyn@osceolaarts.org.
