About the Event
Art in Public Places at the Veterans Memorial St. Cloud Library presents local artist Al "Ache" Latorre. The life story of Latorre is indeed a fascinating journey, marked by resilience, artistic exploration, and meaningful connections within the art world. Al Latorre's early years, growing up in the Alphabet City neighborhood of New York City in the 1970s were shaped by the challenges of frequent hospitalizations due to epileptic seizures. During these times, he discovered a passion for drawing, using art as a means to pass the time and express himself.
His introduction to "writing," an early form of graffiti or street art, during middle school opened up new opportunities for him. This artistic outlet led to mural opportunities at a remarkably young age, showcasing his talent and creative flair.A significant turning point occurred in his teen years during a graffiti-tagging incident when Latorre crossed paths with the legendary artist Andy Warhol. Warhol, impressed by Latorre's talent, invited him to his studio, establishing a mentorship that would last until Warhol's death. This encounter provided Latorre with not only guidance but also friendship, shaping his artistic trajectory.
Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Latorre actively exhibited his work in New York City galleries and collaborated with renowned artists such as Keith Haring, Basquiat, and their contemporaries. These collaborations not only expanded his artistic horizons but also solidified his presence in the vibrant New York art scene.
In 1996, Al Latorre made a significant move to South Florida, where he pursued a career as a carpenter. However, his passion for art persisted, leading him to open "Da Lowa Deck Gallery" in Lanatan, Florida, and the Graffiti Iconnz Gallery in South Florida. These spaces served as platforms for showcasing his own work and that of other talented artists.Latorre continued to exhibit his art in solo exhibitions, auctions, and prestigious events such as Art Basel Miami, Art Hamptons, and Posh Design Studios.
His presence in these venues further established him as a respected artist with a unique voice.Al Latorre's life story is a testament to his resilience, artistic evolution, and the pursuit of creative expression despite facing personal and societal challenges. From his early struggles with epilepsy to his encounters with influential figures like Andy Warhol, Latorre's journey is a captivating narrative of overcoming obstacles and leaving a lasting impact on the art world.
